If you’ve ever felt that the Anastasia’s patented Golden Ratio Eyebrow Shaping Technique was mystifying, this feature on the Arch breaks it down step by step. Read on to discover the gateway to your individualized brows.
“We believe beauty is about balance & proportion, not perfection.”
Anastasia Beverly Hills was founded in 1997 when Anastasia Soare, inspired by the ancient principle of Divine Proportion, began tending to the shape of an at the time often overlooked feature - brows.
Anastasia recognized that this mathematical principle of thirds, known more modernly as the Golden Ratio, could influence not only centuries of art and architecture, but could be applied directly to the human face to create aesthetic harmony. Believing that brows should be shaped according to an individual's bone structure, Anastasia developed a formula for the Golden Ratio's application.
The concept was transformative, and she soon built a cult following. What followed was the patented Golden Ratio Eyebrow Shaping Method, and later, the patent-pending Golden Ratio Contouring Method. Both were designed to deliver balance and proportion as unique as the individual.
These timeless pillars of aesthetic proportion and a commitment to the creation of quality continue to be behind every aspect of the Anastasia Beverly Hills brand today.
The guiding principle behind Anastasia’s universal eyebrow shaping technique. Observed in patterns that occur in nature, art, music, and the human body, the Golden Ratio offers the key to finding balance, symmetry, and beauty
Q: How would you describe your approach to beauty?
A: My goal has always been to bring a sense of balance, symmetry, and proportion to each individual face. The brows are an essential feature with which to begin. When your arches are perfectly built, the rest of your features are instantly enhanced and brought into focus. It’s all about finding the balance. My Golden Ratio Shaping Technique uses a precise geometric formula that helps women create a tailored foundation for their own unique beauty.
Q: What was your first introduction to the Golden Ratio, and how did you decide to apply it to brows?
A: It was back in art school that I was introduced to the work of Leonardo da Vinci. He based a great deal on the Golden Ratio with the associated balance and proportion applied to the face and to the body. I also remembered a crucial piece of advice a teacher had given me while creating portraits: that if you wanted to change the emotion, you needed to change the eyebrows. Once working as an esthetician, it all came together — why not use the Golden Ratio and find a way to apply it uniquely to each individual’s brows and bone structure? It made perfect sense.
Q: What were clients reactions when you first asked to do their brows?
A: They were reluctant at first! They were nervous to have someone go in and change what they had never really thought of changing before. So I would tell them to hang on, and I would show them what I was about to do. First, I would fill their eyebrows in with my own mixture of eyeshadow, Vaseline, and aloe vera. (There were no products for brows on the market, and this was how I made do.) Once their brows were filled, I would hold up a mirror and show them how all I would be removing was everything beyond the outline I had created. I was always conservative. All it took was one session for clients to see how the right brow shape opened up their entire face, and they were hooked.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who can’t seem to find their shape?
A: If you start with the technique and the stencils as guides and still are coming up confused, chances are you need to let your brows grow out further. Once you have more hair coming in, you’ll be able to distinctly see your natural shape.
